The Downsides of Duct Cleaning

We clean ducts for a living, so you might expect us to say there are no downsides. There are a few. Knowing them helps you decide if a cleaning makes sense for your home and helps you pick the right company.

It Costs Money

A full cleaning is not cheap. Around Waukesha and Milwaukee most homes land somewhere in the hundreds of dollars, depending on size and how the company prices the job. If your ducts are not very dirty, that money might be better spent somewhere else for now.

The fix is simple. Only clean when there is a reason, like a remodel, pets, a new home or 3 to 5 years since the last cleaning.

A Bad Job Can Make It Worse

This is the biggest downside and it has nothing to do with cleaning itself. Some companies show up with a shop vac or a spinning brush on a drill. Those tools stir dust loose without pulling it out, so it ends up in your living room instead of the truck.

A careless crew can also damage flexible ducts, leave holes unsealed or knock connections loose in the basement. In older Milwaukee and Wauwatosa homes with tight turns and old metal ductwork, that care matters even more.

Then there are the coupon outfits. A low advertised price turns into a long list of add ons once they are inside. Read our post on how to spot a scam before you book anyone.

It Is Not a Cure

Clean ducts remove a lot of dust, pet dander and debris from your system. That can make a home feel fresher. But the EPA notes that duct cleaning has not been proven to prevent health problems, and it will not fix allergies by itself.

If someone in your house struggles with allergies or asthma, talk with your doctor. Think of duct cleaning as one piece along with good filters, regular dusting and controlling humidity through a Wisconsin winter.

It Takes Part of Your Day

Someone needs to be home. Most cleanings take three to five hours, and the furnace is off while we work. The crew needs room around the vents and the furnace, and there will be equipment and hoses in your home for a while.

On a cold January morning in Brookfield or Oak Creek, a few hours without heat is noticeable. Most homes hold their warmth fine, but it is worth planning around.

How to Avoid the Downsides

  • Clean only when there is a real reason, not on a yearly sales pitch
  • Ask how they price the job before anyone comes out
  • Ask what equipment they use and look for a HEPA negative air vacuum
  • Ask for before and after photos of every vent
  • Make sure they follow NADCA standards and seal every access hole
  • Book in spring or fall if a few hours without heat or air bothers you

SimpliHome charges a flat $0.22 per square foot, uses a 5000 CFM HEPA negative air vacuum and shows you photos of every vent when the job is done. If you want a straight answer on whether your home needs it, get a free quote.
